August 1, 2008 — huckleberryfriendI have been watching some clips from Canadian Idol (posted at MJ’s). I’m enjoying it more than the last 2 seasons of AI. The show is about talent … and singing … and the contestants … not the judges or the host.
Three of the contestants are amazing. This post is about Mookie Morris and I will follow up with a post for each of the other 2 amazing singers.
Mookie just graduated from high school and is the youngest contestant at 18. On his Myspace page, he lists his musical influences as classic rock, John Lennon, J. Casablancas-Stokes, Late Beatles, Lou Reed, Beck, Damon Albarn, Rolling Stones (Brian Jones era), Mark Ronson, Chemical Brothers, Early Canadian Indie, Radiohead, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Iggy Pop, Jim Morrison, and on and on. The kid knows his music.

I think Mookie is channeling Buddy Holly. What goes on in the brains of some people that they hear things the rest of us never will? To be 18 and so talented. I hope we hear from him for a long time.
