If Only We Could Always Live in Dreams

For at least a year, many of us have wondered why we were so drawn to Taylor Hicks. He has a good voice – not a great voice. During his run on AI5, he was a mop headed, somewhat pudgy, prematurely gray haired soul singer who adopted some of the mannerisms of his musical heroes. Now, at that time, I thought the connection was that he sang songs that brought back good memories from my youth. That theory made sense, a bunch of 40 and 50 somethings reliving their youth through a gray haired soul singer. Here’s one discussion on this topic from graycharles – We speculate on Taylor Hicks and American Idol – Others Study.

And that may be part of it. But that seems kind of simple. So the other day, while sitting on the deck drinking tequila sours, and listening to Roy Orbison on my ipod, the answer came to me. Hint – the song I was listening to was In the Real World.

In The Real World – Roy Orbison (Jennings/Kerr)

In dreams we do so many things
We set aside the rules we know
And fly the world so high
In great and shining rings

If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems

But in the real world
We must say real goodbyes
No matter if the love will live
It will never die

In the real world
There are things that we can’t change
And endings come to us
In ways that we can’t rearrange

I love you, and you love me
But sometimes we must let it be
In the real world
In the real world

When we were dreaming heart to heart
I wish that we had stayed right there
For when the dreamers do awake
The dreams do disappear

If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems

But in the real world
We must say real goodbyes
No matter if the love will live
It will never die

In the real world
There are things that we can’t change
And endings come to us
In ways that we can’t rearrange

I love you, and you love me
But sometimes we must let it be
In the real world
In the real world

Give up?

I think it is because Taylor’s dream world and real world are the same. How many times have I heard people say “Taylor is living his dream” or “I just wanted to help him make his dream come true”? More than any other contestant on AI, Taylor sold his “dream world” to us and we saw that it was possible. Maybe we can’t live our dream world, but we could help Taylor live his. And just maybe, some of his dream world would rub off on us.

As I read through the various Taylor fan sites, I read time after time about how happy Taylor looks. Isn’t this is strange comment to make after a concert? Do fans says this after a Kelly, Clay, Ruben, Fantasia, or Carrie concert? Why are fans so vested in Taylor’s happiness? I believe because if Taylor seems happy, we know it is because he is living his dream. So we feel better, knowing it is possible for dreams to come true. For our dreams to become our real world.

But I wonder if we overlook the sacrifices that Taylor has made to make his dreams come true. How many of us are willing to commit to that degree of sacrifice?

So is it a Dream or is it the Real World?

So Taylor, I wish you continued success in your Dreams and in Your Real World! You have earned it.

  1. Huck,
I’ve said this for a while but I think folks do identify with Taylor because he is that “everyman”, the guy next door, the nephew, the best friend’s son, etc. He also embraced his fans and encouraged them…gave them all the credit and told them that he relied on them. In a nutshell, he made people feel a part of the process and the “ride”.
